How does my Ark produce food?
Field Plot
Broad-acre annual staple crop production using the Three Sisters guild (corn, pole beans, winter squash) integrated with small grains (wheat, oats, rye) and a rotating cover crop year. This is the rig that bridges the Ark from supplemental gardening to actual caloric self-sufficiency. Where the Porch Garden, Guild Ring, and Walipini supply diversity, micronutrients, and shoulder-season production, Field Plot supplies *calories* — the dense storable energy that carries a household through winter and underwrites every other rig's ambition. The mental shift this rig requires: stop thinking like a gardener (rows of monoculture, fight weeds, replenish nutrients with bagged inputs) and start thinking like a soil farmer (integrated guilds, diversity as defense, soil biology as fertility). The Three Sisters is not a planting scheme — it is a guild pattern with thousands of years of empirical validation as a complete-protein staple system. Cover cropping is not a fallow practice — it is the productive year, where the soil itself is the harvest. Field Plot starts at ¼ acre for a household supplemental crop, scales to 1–2 acres for a family of 4–6 to lean primarily on it, and reaches 5 acres only when Trade-economic surplus is the goal. This is the rig that taught humans how to leave foraging behind, and it is still the most regenerative way to feed a family at scale.

Hedgerow
A productive living fence — a single linear planting that simultaneously functions as boundary, food source, animal forage, windbreak, privacy screen, soil-builder, and wildlife corridor. The Hedgerow is the rig that demonstrates a foundational Ark principle: design for multiple yields from the same footprint, and watch the yields compound on each other rather than competing. Where a fence depreciates over time and a single-purpose berry patch produces berries and nothing else, a well-designed Hedgerow appreciates over decades — the thorny shrubs grow denser, the fruit trees mature into nut and orchard layers, the nitrogen-fixers feed the heavy producers, the deep-rooted perennials build soil from below, and the bees, birds, and beneficial insects make every other Grow rig more productive. The Hedgerow is also genuinely cross-domain: it lives in Grow (producing food), is referenced from Shield as The Hedge (where its security function is the framing), and Feeds Tend rigs with high-quality forage. One planting, three domain perspectives. The mental shift this rig demands: stop separating "function" from "form" — a barbed-wire fence is a single-function liability that costs money and depreciates; a Hedgerow is a multi-function asset that pays back, builds equity in the soil, and replaces five separate purchases (fence, berry patch, windbreak, privacy screen, wildlife habitat) with one planting. The cost is patience: 2–4 years to full productivity. The compounding return after that is decades of yield from a system that runs on rainfall, light pruning, and the work the plants are doing on their own. The Guild Ring2 builds
A permaculture fruit-tree guild — an anchor fruit tree surrounded by carefully selected supporting plants, all enclosed in a dry-stacked stone ring. Unlike every other Grow rig, the Guild Ring is a living system, not an equipment list. You don't operate it; you establish it, and then it operates itself for decades. Year 1 is heavy work (sheet mulching, planting, watering); years 2–3 are light maintenance; from year 5 onward, the system produces fruit, berries, and herbs with minimal intervention while continuously building soil fertility. This is also the rig that closes the most important Loop in the entire Ark — finished humanure compost from The Sanctum belongs on fruit trees, the canonical safe use case for it under the standard 2-year curing protocol. A Guild Ring receiving regular Sanctum compost becomes the Ark's most efficient nutrient-cycling system.

The Living Shelf

The Porch Garden2 builds
A protected, semi-outdoor growing space that bridges the indoor rigs (Shelf Stack, Window Farm, Rack Farm, Living Shelf) and the fully-outdoor rigs (Guild Ring, Walipini). Built into an existing porch, patio, or balcony — no land modification required. Soil-based, not hydroponic. Uses wicking beds for largely self-watering operation and polycarbonate panels for season extension. Where the indoor rigs produce greens and herbs continuously and the outdoor rigs produce seasonally, the Porch Garden produces foods that demand more space and warmth than indoor rigs can provide — tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, strawberries — while extending your growing season by 4–8 weeks on each end. This is also the soil-based introduction to the Grow domain after mastering hydroponics: wicking beds eliminate the daily-watering burden, and the polycarbonate enclosure protects against pests, weather extremes, and zone limitations.

The Rack Farm3 builds
Indoor microgreen and sprout production system on standard shelving. Produces harvestable food in 7–14 days — the fastest seed-to-harvest rig in the Grow domain. Introduces staggered planting (one tray planted, one harvested daily), the same mental model used in The Shelf Stack. High nutritional density per square foot — microgreens contain 4–40× the nutrient concentration of their mature counterparts.

The Seed Bank
Seasonal seed-saving practice for the household: select true-to-type plants, harvest, clean, dry, label, and store seed for next season's Grow rigs. The working library that fails recoverably (a forgotten jar). Paired bidirectionally with The Lineage (Archive) — the multi-decade freeze and records vault. Seed Bank feeds Lineage with fresh lots; Lineage returns recovery seed when the working jars fail or a variety needs re-establishment.

The Shelf Stack
Vertical indoor hydroponic system for continuous leafy green production. Fits against a wall in a kitchen, garage, or spare room. Uses passive Kratky-method totes — no pumps, no plumbing, no electricity beyond grow lights and a timer. Produces enough lettuce, herbs, and greens to meaningfully supplement a family of four year-round. This is the rig the Window Farm prepares you for — same hydroponic principles, scaled up to where it actually replaces grocery store produce.

The Walipini3 builds
A semi-subterranean passive-solar greenhouse — the most complex, most expensive, and most resilient Grow rig in the entire Ark. The Walipini ("place of warmth" in Aymara) was developed by the Benson Agriculture and Food Institute at Brigham Young University from indigenous Bolivian designs. The principle is elegant: dig a 6–8 ft pit, cover it with angled glazing oriented toward the winter sun, and let the surrounding earth — which stays at a constant 50–60°F below the frost line — provide free thermal stability. Add water barrels as supplemental thermal mass, and you get a structure that grows tomatoes through January in zone 5. Where the Porch Garden extends the season by 4–8 weeks, the Walipini eliminates the off-season entirely. This is the rig that makes household food sovereignty possible in cold climates, and the rig that integrates more domains than any other — Well (Sky Well from glazing, Deep Reserve cistern), Power (The Burn for supplemental heat), Loop (The Sanctum compost for fruit trees grown inside), Signal (Sentry monitoring, Actuator vent control), Forge (The Mill for lumber), Shield (The Hedge as windbreak). Build this rig last because every rig it Feeds with is already documented. Build this rig only when you're ready to commit to a structure that should last 30+ years.

The Window Farm2 builds
The simplest possible indoor food-growing system. One plant per jar on a windowsill or suction-cup shelf, using passive Kratky hydroponics. No pumps, no electricity for water movement, no plumbing. Exists to prove to yourself that you can grow food indoors before committing to anything larger — what you learn here transfers directly to The Shelf Stack.
