The Porch Garden
A protected, semi-outdoor growing space that bridges the indoor rigs (Shelf Stack, Window Farm, Rack Farm, Living Shelf) and the fully-outdoor rigs (Guild Ring, Walipini).
Built into an existing porch, patio, or balcony — no land modification required. Soil-based, not hydroponic. Uses wicking beds for largely self-watering operation and polycarbonate panels for season extension. Where the indoor rigs produce greens and herbs continuously and the outdoor rigs produce seasonally, the Porch Garden produces foods that demand more space and warmth than indoor rigs can provide — tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, strawberries — while extending your growing season by 4–8 weeks on each end. This is also the soil-based introduction to the Grow domain after mastering hydroponics: wicking beds eliminate the daily-watering burden, and the polycarbonate enclosure protects against pests, weather extremes, and zone limitations.

A single wicking bed on an existing porch or patio, no enclosure. Proves the wicking concept and produces a meaningful tomato/pepper crop in one season. Most beginners should start here before committing to the full enclosure.
One IBC = two wicking beds (top half + bottom half). Each ~20 sq ft growing area. Critical: confirm with the seller what was previously stored — must be food-safe. Detergents and food products OK; industrial chemicals NOT OK.

Fills the bottom 8" of the bed. Creates the water reservoir between particles. Lava rock (scoria) is lighter and more porous; pea gravel is cheaper and more available.

Drilled through the side of the bed at exactly the top of the reservoir level. When the reservoir is full, excess water drains here — preventing overwatering. Position is critical: too high = waterlogged soil, too low = useless reservoir.
The top layer where plants actually grow. Heavier organic content than typical garden soil — wicking beds rely on the soil acting as a wick, which requires high organic matter content. Cap with 2" of mulch.

Reduces evaporation from the soil surface. A wicking bed's main water loss is from the top — mulch turns weeks of self-watering into months.
Indeterminate tomatoes (cherry types are easiest). Compact peppers. One climbing cucumber per bed (trellis required). Basil benefits hugely from wicking-bed moisture stability.

Full polycarbonate enclosure of an existing porch or covered patio, with multiple wicking beds and automated ventilation. Year-round growing in most zones. Season extension of 4–8 weeks on each end of summer. The full-realization version of the rig.
Must support panel attachment. Standard residential porch posts are usually adequate. Verify roof can shed snow load if you're in a snow region.

Same construction as Path A but at scale. One bed per main crop (tomato bed, pepper bed, cucumber bed, greens/herbs bed).
Covers 192–320 sq ft of wall area. Install with flutes (channels) running vertically for water drainage and structural strength. UV-protected side (marked) faces sun — installing it backwards causes yellowing within 1–2 years. R-value 1.6, light transmission 80%.

If your porch roof is solid (shingles, metal), you don't need polycarbonate above — the existing roof is fine, just enclose the walls. If your porch is open above, polycarbonate roof panels are needed for the greenhouse effect.
H-channels join two panels edge-to-edge. U-channels cap exposed ends and prevent water/dust entry into the flutes. Both are required for a watertight, professional-quality install.
Polycarbonate panels expand and contract with temperature — fasteners must allow movement. Use specialty greenhouse screws with neoprene seal washers, drilled holes 2× the screw diameter.
Caps the top of vertical flutes. Critical: end caps must be vented — sealed flutes trap moisture and grow mold inside the panels.
The hot-air exhaust at the top of the structure. Should total at least 20% of the floor area for adequate ventilation. Prefabricated vents from greenhouse suppliers, or DIY-cut from one polycarbonate panel and hinged.
Pair with roof vents to create the chimney effect — hot air out the top, cool air in at the bottom. Without lower vents, ventilation is ~30% less effective.

Non-electric. Uses thermal expansion of mineral wax to open vents at preset temperatures (adjustable 55–75°F). Closes when temp drops. The single highest-value device in the entire rig — without automatic ventilation, the enclosure overheats and kills plants on any sunny 80°F+ day. Lifespan 10–15 years.

Fill wicking beds via the inlet pipe weekly during peak season, monthly during cooler months. A 200 sq ft Porch Garden uses ~5–10 gallons per week.

The single most underrated technology in home food production. A traditional raised bed needs daily watering during summer; a wicking bed needs weekly watering — sometimes only every two weeks. The biology of why this works: capillary action draws water from the reservoir up through the soil, and the soil itself acts as the wick. Plants drink as they need it, which is the opposite of how surface watering works (where you give plants water on your schedule and hope it lasts until next time). Wicking beds dramatically reduce three of the most common gardening failures: drought stress (water is always available), root rot (water level is regulated by overflow), and uneven watering (every plant gets the same access). The economics: $80 per IBC-tote bed produces the equivalent of $300+ in produce per season once established. The mental shift: you stop thinking about watering as a chore and start thinking about it as a monthly utility check. The honest math of greenhouse panels. R-value 1.6 doesn't sound like much (a normal exterior wall is R-13), but it's not about insulation in the traditional sense — it's about thermal mass and solar gain. A south-facing porch enclosed in 6mm twin-wall polycarbonate runs 15–25°F warmer than the outside air during the day in spring/fall, and 5–10°F warmer at night. That delta gives you an extra 4–8 weeks of growing season on each end. Tomatoes in March and ripe peppers in October become possible in zone 6. The Porch Garden is where many users encounter soil-based growing for the first time after building hydroponic rigs. There's a real adjustment. Hydroponics is precise, measurable, controllable — you read pH and EC and adjust. Soil is biological, slow, and resilient — you build fertility over years and let the soil microbiome do most of the work. Both approaches are valid, and a household with both rigs becomes more resilient than one with either alone.
