Seasonal seed-saving practice for the household: select true-to-type plants, harvest, clean, dry, label, and store seed for next season's Grow rigs.
The working library that fails recoverably (a forgotten jar). Paired bidirectionally with The Lineage (Archive) — the multi-decade freeze and records vault. Seed Bank feeds Lineage with fresh lots; Lineage returns recovery seed when the working jars fail or a variety needs re-establishment.
FootprintOne cool dry shelf + drying screensA pantry corner or closet shelf for labeled jars/envelopes, plus a temporary drying rack (screens or paper plates) during harvest season. No freezer required for the working set.YieldNext season's Grow inventory + fresh lots for LineageEnough true seed of 10–30 household varieties to plant next year without buying packets, plus surplus packets to hand to neighbors or freeze into The Lineage.CycleSeasonal by cropPlan at sowing; mark plants mid-season; harvest/dry/label at maturity; annual inventory before spring planting. Isolation distance and biennial habits set the calendar.
The parts list. Cores are what you actually need; “if you prefer” opens cheaper, local, or heritage swaps — never budget fallbacks, just other good ways.
Working containers
Coin envelopes + wide-mouth Mason jars with lids$10–25 starter
One variety per envelope; envelopes into jars by family or year. Label envelope AND jar.
if you prefer… (2)
Paper seed packets (blank)$5–15Fine for short-term; less moisture protection than jar+envelope.
Small glass vials with corks$10–20Good for tiny seed lots (lettuce, brassica).
Drying surface
Window screens or food-safe mesh on frames$0–20 DIY
Single layer, airflow, shade, 50–70°F. Never dry in a hot car or direct sun for most crops.
if you prefer… (1)
Paper plates / coffee filters~$0Small lots only; stir daily.
Desiccant
Reusable silica gel packs (color-indicating)$8–20
Finish drying and keep working jars dry. Recharge packs in a low oven per package directions.
if you prefer… (1)
Dry rice in a breathable pouch (emergency)~$0Inferior to silica; better than nothing short-term.
Labels
Permanent marker + washi or masking tape, or pre-printed labels$3–10
Colander, screens of two mesh sizes, trays, fan optional$10–30
Winnowing (fan or breeze) separates chaff. Wet-processed crops (tomato, cucumber) need fermentation or gel removal first.
if you prefer… (1)
Kitchen sieve setExistingAdequate for small lots.
Record card / notebook
Simple log: variety, year, grams or packet count, germination notes$0–10
The Seed Bank fails when labels fail. Records also tell The Lineage what is worth freezing.
Isolation aids
Row cover / bagging material for insect-pollinated crops when neighbors grow same species$10–40
Beans and tomatoes are often easy (mostly selfing). Squash, corn, brassicas need distance or bagging to stay true.
if you prefer… (1)
Time isolation (successive plantings)$0Works when you control bloom windows.
Germination test kit
Paper towels, plates, spray bottle, warm spot$0–5
Before spring, test old lots: 10–20 seeds, count sprout %. Retire weak lots or refresh from Lineage.

⑤ The Echo
Working Shelf vs Deep Vault~12 min
The Seed Bank and The Lineage are one sovereignty story cut at different time scales. The Seed Bank is this year and next — jars you open, plant, and refill. The Lineage is the civilization-scale backup — frozen, recorded, rarely opened. Confusing them causes two failures: freezing undried working seed, or treating the freezer as the only shelf and never actually growing the varieties. Use the Bank every season. Touch the Lineage on purpose, with a checklist.
Dry First or Lose Everything~10 min
Moisture kills seed in the jar and destroys seed in the freezer. The skill that unifies both rigs is drying to a hard, snap-dry state before any long storage. If you only learn one craft from this page, learn dry. Everything else — labels, isolation, fancy freezers — is secondary to that.
Isolation Is Honesty About Genetics~12 min
Saving seed without isolation on outcrossing crops is how “mystery squash” and bitter cucumbers happen. Easy savers (many beans, peas, tomatoes) forgive beginners. Corn, squash, brassicas, and cucumbers demand distance, bagging, or time isolation if you care about true type. The Bank is not a packet aisle — it is a genetics practice. Honesty about isolation is respect for next year’s garden and for anyone you share seed with.

←materialField PlotYear-over-year saved seed from best-performing plants. The Seed Bank is the active seasonal turnover — clean, dry, packet, label, store for next planting. Field Plot is the highest-volume seed contributor in the Grow domain.
→materialThe LineageFresh, viable seed flows IN from The Seed Bank (Grow): each year's best-saved harvest feeds the long-term vault, and aging frozen lots are re-stocked from The Seed Bank's current-generation seed. This is the inbound half of the bidirectional pairing — Grow produces, The Lineage preserves.
←materialThe LineageRecovery seed flows OUT to The Seed Bank (Grow): when a variety is lost, fails, or runs out in the working year-to-year rig, The Lineage thaws the frozen backup and returns viable seed to be grown back into circulation.
