The Guild Ring
A permaculture fruit-tree guild — an anchor fruit tree surrounded by carefully selected supporting plants, all enclosed in a dry-stacked stone ring.
Unlike every other Grow rig, the Guild Ring is a living system, not an equipment list. You don't operate it; you establish it, and then it operates itself for decades. Year 1 is heavy work (sheet mulching, planting, watering); years 2–3 are light maintenance; from year 5 onward, the system produces fruit, berries, and herbs with minimal intervention while continuously building soil fertility. This is also the rig that closes the most important Loop in the entire Ark — finished humanure compost from The Sanctum belongs on fruit trees, the canonical safe use case for it under the standard 2-year curing protocol. A Guild Ring receiving regular Sanctum compost becomes the Ark's most efficient nutrient-cycling system.

One semi-dwarf fruit tree, full guild composition, dry-stacked stone enclosure. The canonical Guild Ring. Plants are not in the manifest — see the Tables tab for zone-aware species selection across the six guild roles.
Dry-stacked, no mortar. Keep wall under 3 ft to avoid permits and engineering. The 18–24" range is tall enough for thermal mass and visual definition, short enough for easy build. Source locally — transportation is the major cost.

Trench around the ring 12" wide × 6" deep. Fill with crushed gravel, compact, then build the wall on top. Critical for freeze-thaw stability.

Lay over existing grass / weeds inside the ring. Smothers competition. Wet thoroughly. Earthworms colonize and decompose it within a year. Remove tape.

Optional but transformative on sloped sites. A 6" deep × 18" wide curved trench on the uphill side captures rainfall and lets it soak in. Plants downhill drink for weeks afterward.
Food ForestADVANCED$600–2000+
Three to five Guild Rings installed with overlapping canopies and shared paths — a small backyard food forest. Different anchor species in each ring (apple, pear, cherry, plum) creates cross-pollination, season-spread harvests, and pest resistance through diversity. There are no separate items to buy — Path B multiplies Path A and adds layout principles.
Each ring is its own complete Path A build. Locate so canopies will eventually touch but not overlap. Plan 4–6 ft of path between adjacent rings.
Wood chips reduce weeding. The path between rings becomes the working zone — wide enough for a wheelbarrow, narrow enough that nothing's wasted.

Different bloom times = better pollination. Different harvest windows = spread-out food production. Different disease vulnerabilities = no single pest can wipe out the food forest.
Connect the perimeter ground-cover layer between rings — a continuous pollinator highway across the entire food forest. White clover or creeping thyme are the canonical choices.

⑤ The Echo
What makes a permaculture guild different from companion planting. A guild is a system with structure: anchor tree as the canopy, shrubs as the understory, herbs and ground covers as the herbaceous layer, comfrey as the nutrient miner, clover as the fertility engine, alliums as the pest defenders. Each plant fills a niche; each plant supports the others. The forest analogy isn't a metaphor — it's a literal description. A wild forest doesn't need fertilizer because nitrogen-fixers and dynamic accumulators do that work. It doesn't need pest control because diversity confuses pest patterns. It doesn't need irrigation because mulch and shade hold soil moisture. A guild is a forest compressed into 200 sq ft. Why this rig is the deepest investment in the entire Grow domain — three years of work for thirty years of food. The mental shift required: industrial agriculture treats fields as factories that produce one thing efficiently; a guild treats a piece of ground as an ecosystem that produces many things resiliently. Both work. Resilience matters more for households.
The single highest-value Loop in the entire Ark. Humanure compost, properly cured for two years per the Joseph Jenkins protocol from The Sanctum, is exactly the right input for fruit-tree guilds. Fruit trees are the canonical safe use case for finished humanure — non-edible parts of the system (trunk, branches, leaves, fruit on tall trees) provide enough buffer between the soil amendment and the consumed produce that even the most cautious public-health guidance allows it. Why this Loop is critical: nutrient cycling at the household scale is the only way to true food sovereignty. Buy fertilizer and you depend on industrial supply chains. Cycle your own waste back into your food and you've closed the most important resource loop a household can close. The math: a family of four produces about 50 gallons of solid waste per year. Composted properly, that becomes ~10 gallons of finished humus annually — exactly the right top-dressing for 2–3 mature fruit-tree guilds. The Guild Ring is therefore the destination that justifies the work of building The Sanctum. Without somewhere to apply finished humanure, the Sanctum is theoretical; with the Guild Ring, the Sanctum becomes the hub of the most efficient nutrient cycle in the household.
The honest timeline. Year 1 is heavy work — sheet mulching, stone-wall construction, planting, daily watering during summer heat. The guild looks like a project, not a system. Year 2 is mostly maintenance — weekly watering during dry spells, the first comfrey cuts, lots of staring at slowly-growing trees and wondering if you did this right. Year 3 is the inflection — comfrey cycling 4× per year, berry shrubs producing meaningful harvests, the anchor tree showing its mature form, ground covers filling in. Year 4 is the breakthrough — first real fruit harvest from the anchor, the system clearly working, far less effort than year 1 required. Year 5+ is the destination — the guild produces with minimal intervention, the soil keeps building, you find yourself doing 2–3 hours of work per year and harvesting hundreds of pounds of food. Why this rig demands patience that the rest of the Grow domain doesn't. Why it's worth the wait. How to know in year 1 whether you're on track (anchor tree looking healthy, comfrey establishing, ground cover filling in) or whether something needs correction (tree struggling = wrong rootstock or wrong spot, no comfrey growth = soil amendment failure). The shift in self-perception that happens when you stop being a gardener and become a custodian of a small ecosystem.
