The Hedgerow is the rig that demonstrates a foundational Ark principle: design for multiple yields from the same footprint, and watch the yields compound on each other rather than competing. Where a fence depreciates over time and a single-purpose berry patch produces berries and nothing else, a well-designed Hedgerow appreciates over decades — the thorny shrubs grow denser, the fruit trees mature into nut and orchard layers, the nitrogen-fixers feed the heavy producers, the deep-rooted perennials build soil from below, and the bees, birds, and beneficial insects make every other Grow rig more productive. The Hedgerow is also genuinely cross-domain: it lives in Grow (producing food), is referenced from Shield as The Hedge (where its security function is the framing), and Feeds Tend rigs with high-quality forage. The mental shift this rig demands: stop separating "function" from "form" — a barbed-wire fence is a single-function liability that costs money and depreciates; a Hedgerow is a multi-function asset that pays back, builds equity in the soil, and replaces five separate purchases (fence, berry patch, windbreak, privacy screen, wildlife habitat) with one planting. The cost is patience: 2–4 years to full productivity. The backbone delivers structural density (the ''fence'' function), thorny deterrent (security), and edible fruit (yield) all from the same plant. Plant on 3–4 ft centers for fast canopy closure. Bare-root stock in late winter is the cheapest and most successful establishment method. Native species adapt fastest; choose locally appropriate varieties.
