② The Manifest
The parts list. Cores are what you actually need; “if you prefer” opens cheaper, local, or heritage swaps — never budget fallbacks, just other good ways.
A small chest freezer at 0°F is the deepest backup a household can run. Critical: seed MUST be dried to safe moisture FIRST — freezing seed with leftover moisture causes frost/ice damage inside the seed and kills it. Dry, then freeze. Let frozen jars warm to room temp before opening so condensation forms on the jar, not the seed.

Traditionally, a cool-dark-dry pantry or root cellar~$0No freezer. A consistently cool (50–60°F), dark, dry corner stretches viability for years instead of decades — and never fails in a power outage. Pair with faster rotation: refresh every 2–3 years instead of every 10–20.
Alternatively, a clay pot / ash + sealed gourd cache~$10–25The oldest method on earth. Bone-dry seed packed in wood ash or sand inside a sealed clay pot or dry gourd, kept cool and dark. Sovereign, off-grid, no electricity — the redundancy that survives the freezer dying.
Spare refrigerator/freezer compartment~$0If a chest freezer is out of reach, a dedicated drawer in the kitchen freezer works for a smaller seed library — same dry-first rule applies.
Glass is the gold standard: it's truly airtight, moisture-proof, rodent-proof, and you can see what's inside. One variety per labeled envelope, several envelopes per jar, one desiccant packet per jar. Glass won't off-gas or get chewed through in a freezer.

Labeling, variety logs & breeding notebook (the records)

Skip 'living' and your vault quietly becomes a museum of dead seed.

A landrace or heirloom isn't a fixed object — it's an ongoing dialogue between the plant, the place, and every grower who ever chose which plants to save from. Your records are your half of that conversation: when you note why you saved this plant and not that one, you're speaking to a grower a hundred years out. The seed carries the genetics; the notebook carries the meaning. Lose the records and the variety survives but goes mute.
