The Coop

A backyard chicken flock structured not as a poultry operation but as an integrated household partner.

The Coop produces eggs and occasional meat, but its higher-leverage outputs are the work the flock performs: scratching compost into amendment, eating kitchen waste, controlling garden pests, processing greywater via duckweed feeding, and generating high-nitrogen manure that fertilizes every other Grow rig. This is the rig that teaches the Tend domain. Anyone can keep chickens. The work of the Ark is to design the household so the chickens make every other rig more efficient — and so every other rig makes the chickens healthier and more productive. The chicken-over-grate compost grinder is the signature pattern of this rig, and arguably of the entire Tend domain. The Coop is also the highest-cross-domain-density rig in the entire Ark — it Feeds and is Fed by Loop, Grow, Well, Mend, Trade, and Shield.

① The two lanes

Standard Practice

The conventional baseline. How to keep a healthy flock alive and productive. This lane is the prerequisite — without competent husbandry, no integration is possible. The Manifest and Sequence below cover Lane 1 in full: predator-proofed coop with hardware cloth (never chicken wire), nest boxes, roosts, feeders, waterers, layer feed, oyster shell, grit, starter flock of 4–6 pullets, and a first aid kit. Daily 5–10 min routine; weekly 30 min routine; spring cleanout with 2" mother bedding retained; rolling 1–2 hens replaced per year after year 3.

Stack & Loop

Standard Practice is the prerequisite. Stack & Loop is what makes this rig part of the Ark.

The Compost Grinderloopgrow

Loop integration. The signature pattern of the Tend domain.

The deep litter method turns the coop floor into a slow-motion compost reactor — but the chicken-over-grate refinement turns it into a *compost grinder* that processes rough material from the household and the garden into finished amendment, with the chickens doing all the work. A removable mesh grate (1/4" hardware cloth on a wood frame) suspended 4–6" above the coop floor, with carbon-rich rough compost spread across the grate and food scraps placed on top. Chickens scratch the grate looking for bugs and seeds; their scratching breaks rough material into smaller particles that fall through to the bedding below; the bedding accumulates with manure and processed material until spring cleanout produces high-grade compost.

  1. Build the grate frame to fit the coop floor minus 12" perimeter access for the chickens to walk around it.
  2. Place the grate on cinder block or 4×4 supports, raising it 4–6" above the bedding layer.
  3. Spread rough compost or food scraps in a 2–3" layer across the grate weekly.
  4. Chickens scratch the grate constantly looking for bugs and seeds in the material.
  5. Particles small enough to fall through accumulate in the bedding layer below.
  6. Add fresh bedding as the bottom layer absorbs more material — maintain 12" depth.
  7. Annual spring cleanout: lift the grate, scoop accumulated compost from beneath, leave 2" of mother bedding to inoculate next year. Apply harvested compost to Grow rigs.

Output: ~30 lbs of finished compost per hen per year. For a 6-hen flock, that's ~180 lbs annually — enough to top-dress 2–3 Guild Rings or amend a Field Plot.

The Duckweed Troughloopwell

Loop + Well integration. Greywater becomes high-protein chicken feed.

Kitchen-sink greywater is mostly water with small amounts of food residue, soap, and dissolved nutrients. Run through a duckweed trough, the duckweed strips nutrients from the water (purifying it for downstream irrigation) while doubling its biomass every 2–6 days. The duckweed is harvested as chicken feed at 30–50% protein content — comparable to soybean meal. A second feed source for the chickens that costs nothing, requires almost no labor, and reduces commercial feed consumption by 25–40%.

  1. Position the trough between the kitchen greywater outlet and the irrigation destination (uphill of the garden, downhill of the kitchen).
  2. Plumb the greywater line so water enters at one end, dwells in the trough, and overflows to irrigation at the other end.
  3. Add the starter duckweed culture. Within 1–2 weeks, surface coverage will be near-complete.
  4. Harvest 50% of the surface area every 2–3 days during warm season. Surface coverage regenerates quickly.
  5. Feed harvested duckweed wet to the chickens (most flocks accept it within 2–3 introductions).
  6. Excess duckweed: dry on screens in sun, store in jars for winter feed supplementation.

Output: Studies show duckweed can comprise 25% of a chicken's protein intake without yield loss. For a 6-hen flock consuming ~50 lbs of feed every 4–6 weeks, replacing 25% with duckweed = ~12 lbs of commercial feed saved per cycle, ~100 lbs/year.

The Forage Edgeshield

Shield integration. The Hedge perimeter doubles as chicken forage.

A Hedge planted along the property boundary (Shield domain) provides windbreak, security, and wildlife habitat. Letting the chickens forage along the inside edge of the Hedge during supervised hours adds insect control, dropped-fruit cleanup, and free protein to the flock's diet — while the chickens scratch leaf litter into amendment for the Hedge. A daily 1–2 hour foraging window that supplements feed, controls pest insects in the Hedge, and processes Hedge leaf-fall into broken-down matter.

  1. During Hedge planning (Shield domain), include flock-friendly species: mulberries (huge insect attractor + fallen fruit), hawthorn (berries + thorny shelter), currants/gooseberries (berries + leaf litter).
  2. Install a gate between the run and the Hedge interior path.
  3. Open the gate during low-predator-risk windows (mid-morning to mid-afternoon).
  4. Chickens spread along the Hedge edge, scratch leaf litter, eat insects and fallen fruit, deposit droppings as amendment.
  5. Close the gate before dusk; lock the coop.

The Winter Shelter (Walipini Integration)grow

Grow integration. Chickens overwinter inside the Walipini, contributing body heat and CO₂.

In cold climates, the Walipini's stable underground temperature (50–60°F minimum) makes it an ideal winter shelter for chickens. Bringing the flock into a sectioned area of the Walipini for the coldest months adds three benefits: chickens stay productive (winter laying continues), their body heat and CO₂ output benefit the plants (CO₂ enrichment is a known greenhouse productivity booster), and the Walipini's deep-litter floor benefits from chicken-scratching. Year-round laying through the coldest months (instead of typical winter slowdown), free CO₂ enrichment for Walipini plants, and chicken-driven turnover of Walipini-floor compost.

  1. In the Walipini design (or as a retrofit), section off ~1/4 of the floor area with hardware cloth fence.
  2. Install roost bars and a temporary nest box rack.
  3. In late fall when night temperatures drop below 25°F consistently, transfer the flock to the Walipini section.
  4. Continue daily routines (food, water, egg collection) in the new location.
  5. Plants in the Walipini benefit from CO₂ from chicken respiration (winter greenhouse plants often suffer CO₂ depletion).
  6. Chickens scratch Walipini-floor amendment, breaking up settled material.
  7. In spring, transfer flock back to the main coop. Use the winter section to grow heat-loving spring crops in the now-fertilized soil.

The Garden Patrolgrow

Grow integration. Chickens process post-harvest beds and patrol for pests.

After a Grow rig (Porch Garden, Field Plot, Guild Ring) finishes a production cycle, releasing the flock into the bed for 1–3 days produces a deep cleanup: chickens eat leftover insects (cabbage worms, slugs, grubs), scratch through residual plant matter, and deposit manure that pre-fertilizes the next planting. Pest reduction without pesticides, residue breakdown without manual tillage, and free manure deposition timed exactly when the bed needs it.

  1. Identify recently-harvested beds. Pull or cut down spent plants but leave residue and root crowns.
  2. Set up temporary fencing OR move the chicken tractor over the bed.
  3. Release the flock for 1–3 days (depending on bed size and flock size).
  4. Provide water and shade; food is mostly forage in the bed.
  5. After 1–3 days, move chickens to the next bed or back to the main coop.
  6. The patrolled bed is now: pest-reduced, residue-broken, manure-fertilized.
  7. Wait 30+ days before planting an edible crop in a manured bed (raw manure must compost in place).

The parts list. Cores are what you actually need; “if you prefer” opens cheaper, local, or heritage swaps — never budget fallbacks, just other good ways.

The Compost Grinder Is the Pattern~12 min

The chicken-over-grate compost grinder is the most underrated technology in homesteading. Most chicken keepers use deep litter as a labor-saving cleanout strategy — fewer bedding changes, less smell, decent compost at the end. The compost grinder reframes deep litter as an *active processing system*: rough material goes in (kitchen scraps too coarse for the worm bin, garden waste too tough for direct application, fall leaves, weed pulls), the chickens process it through scratching, and finished amendment comes out the other side. The grate is what makes the difference. Without it, scraps and bedding mix into one slow heap. With it, the chickens are constantly working the surface — turning it into a particle-size sorter that separates fine processed material (falls through) from coarse material that needs more work (stays on top). This is also why the rig works at small household scale where conventional composting stalls. A backyard compost pile often fails because nobody turns it; the chickens turn it because that''s what chickens do. You''re not keeping chickens to make compost. Standard Practice is the competent baseline — predator-proofing, feeding, watering, daily routine, recognizing illness, butchering when necessary. Without these skills, no integration matters: a flock that''s been killed by a weasel last week can''t process compost this week. Most homesteading content stops at Lane 1. But it would be dishonest to skip past Lane 1 or to treat it as ''boring fundamentals.'' The compost grinder fails if the chickens are sick. Lane 2 is what makes the rig worth building. This honest framing also prevents the Tend domain from becoming aspirational fantasy. Real flocks die. Real predators get in. Real winters reduce laying. The Stack & Loop integrations are the reward for getting Lane 1 right; they''re not a substitute for the work of getting it right.

Eggs Are the Smallest Output9 min

People start chickens for breakfast. The Ark keeps chickens because the flock works the property: scratching compost, eating scraps, chasing pests, dropping nitrogen where Grow beds need it. Eggs are real. They are not the highest leverage product of a well-wired Coop. The compost-grinder pattern is the signature — birds over a grate, kitchen and garden waste underneath, castings and turned material heading back to beds. Standard husbandry still comes first. Sick or stressed birds integrate nothing; they only create chores. Lane one competence (clean water, secure housing, basic health) is the ticket to lane two loops. What changes is how the garden and the trash can feel. Waste has a destination with feathers. Pest pressure drops near the run. Manure becomes a scheduled input instead of a problem to bag. Trade and table both benefit, yet the daily win is a household where the animals earn their feed in work you would otherwise do alone.
