The Gray Link is the bridge between your air-gapped local systems and the wider world, used deliberately and on your terms. It powers Winlink gateways, software updates, supply orders, and research. It is not the backbone of your Ark — it is a tool you use when the Ark needs to reach out.

Satellite broadband via SpaceX LEO constellation. Works anywhere with open sky — no cell tower, no cable, no line of sight to a terrestrial provider needed. The only option for truly remote properties. Latency is 25-60ms, usable for everything including video calls. The dish self-orients and requires minimal installation beyond power and a clear view of sky.
The dish (Dishy) is a flat phased-array antenna that self-aligns to the satellite constellation. Plug in power, wait 5 minutes, you have internet. No aiming, no installer, no appointment.

Mount at roofline or on a short pole. The dish needs clear sky — not necessarily the highest point, just unobstructed. A J-mount on a gable end or a ground pole near the house works. Avoid the tallest mast on your property — that draws eyes.

The included router works fine for most setups. For more control — VPN, VLAN isolation, ad blocking, device-level firewall — bypass it with your own router (see Network section below).
Route all traffic through a VPN by default. This separates your browsing, your location, and your identity from your ISP (which for Starlink is SpaceX). A travel router with WireGuard built in handles this with minimal configuration.

Starlink draws 40-75W (Standard) or 20-40W (Mini). A basic UPS gives 1-2 hours of connectivity during a power blip. Enough to send a Winlink message or finish a critical task.

Residential is tied to a service address but can roam within your continent. Mobile works anywhere but costs more. For a fixed Ark, Residential is sufficient. Pause service anytime — no contract.

Terrestrial wireless broadband from a local WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider) or T-Mobile/Verizon 5G Home Internet. Requires a tower or cell site within range. Lower cost than Starlink, often faster in areas with good coverage, but dependent on a local provider — which means it fails when local infrastructure fails. A good primary option where available, with Starlink as backup.
Most providers supply hardware included with service. T-Mobile and Verizon ship a self-install gateway. WISPs typically install a directional antenna aimed at their tower.
Mounted on roof or pole with line of sight to the provider tower. The WISP installer typically handles this. Performance depends entirely on signal quality — ask for a site survey before committing.

Cellular gateways draw 10-20W. A small UPS keeps you connected through typical outages. Meaningless during a sustained grid failure — the cell tower has its own battery life measured in hours.
T-Mobile is no-contract, self-install, widely available. WISPs vary wildly in quality — ask neighbors, check reviews, test before committing annually.

Every other rig in the Signal domain is about communication without infrastructure — mesh networks, radio, antennas, ionospheric propagation. The Gray Link is the opposite. It is infrastructure. It is a commercial service from a corporation, delivered via satellites or towers owned by someone else, billed monthly to a credit card. So why is it in the Ark? Because the internet is not optional for modern life, and pretending otherwise is fantasy. You order supplies online. You research solutions online. You manage finances online. Your children learn online. Veterinary references, weather forecasts, parts diagrams, firmware updates, seed catalogs, tax filings — all online. An Ark without internet is not more sovereign. It is less capable. The discipline is not disconnection. It is deliberate connection. You use the internet as a tool, not as an environment. You route your traffic through a VPN so your ISP sees encrypted packets instead of your browsing history. You segment your network so a compromised device cannot reach your personal data. You position your dish so it does not announce itself from the road. You maintain backup communication — HF, Winlink, mesh — so that if the commercial link goes down, you are reduced but not silenced. The Gray Link is the loudest pipe and the quietest installation. It carries the most data and demands the most discipline. Every other rig in Signal works without it. But the Ark works better with it — as long as you never forget that it is a tool you use, not a foundation you depend on. The foundation is the mesh. The foundation is the radio. The Gray Link is the convenience layer on top, used deliberately, maintained carefully, and never mistaken for something you cannot lose.
A single internet connection is a single point of failure. The cable gets cut, the tower loses power, the satellite constellation has an outage, the provider goes bankrupt — and your broadband disappears. For most households this is an inconvenience. For an Ark, it is a gap in capability. The solution is redundancy through diversity. Two connections that do not share failure modes. Starlink fails when: the satellite constellation has a regional outage, the dish loses power, heavy rain or snow covers the dish, or SpaceX changes terms of service. It does not fail when: a local tower loses power, a backhoe cuts a fiber line, or a cellular network is congested during an emergency. Fixed wireless fails when: the tower loses power or backhaul, the cellular network is overloaded, or weather degrades the signal path. It does not fail when: a satellite constellation has an outage or a dish is obstructed. The overlap in failure modes is small. A regional power outage affects both — but your UPS and battery backup cover hours, and your HF station covers days. A catastrophic infrastructure failure takes both — but that is when your mesh network and radio take over entirely. If budget allows one connection, choose Starlink for remote properties or cellular for properties with coverage. If budget allows two, run both and configure your router to failover automatically. The monthly cost of a backup connection is insurance — and like all insurance, you pay it hoping to never use it, knowing that the one time you need it, it pays for every month you carried it. The Gray Link is not one connection. It is the discipline of maintaining two paths to the world, so that losing one does not mean losing both.
