The Backup Rack

Layered emergency power as the last-resort combustion and mechanical backup when the Sun Bank is depleted and the sun is not cooperating.

② The Manifest

The parts list. Cores are what you actually need; “if you prefer” opens cheaper, local, or heritage swaps — never budget fallbacks, just other good ways.

Primary generator

Propane (or multi-fuel) generator sized for Tier 1–2 critical loads (e.g. 3–7 kW)~$800–2,500

Propane has excellent shelf life, is relatively quiet, and starts reliably. Size for surge of pumps and motors, not just running watts. Have at least two tanks and a way to rotate them.

Fuel storage and rotation

Ultimate low-tech backup. No batteries or electronics required — just belts, a shaft, and an engine that runs on whatever fuel you have. Document exact hookup and test regularly.

Compressed air storage

Useful for air tools, tire inflation, and small air-powered devices. Long shelf life, simple, and the tanks themselves can be a battery of pressurized air.

Transfer switch / critical sub-panel

Manual transfer switch or interlock kit + clearly labeled critical loads sub-panel~$150–400

Prevents backfeeding the grid (dangerous to linemen) and makes it obvious what is on backup power. Label everything so tired person in dark can operate correctly.

Monitoring and safety

③ The Sequence

01Decide the tiers and what critical really meansPlanning 1–2 days Tier 1 (hours): comms, minimal lights, small medical devices. Tier 2 (days): Well pump for water, basic refrigeration, small tools. Tier 3 (weeks): more comfort but still limited. Write it down. The Backup Rack is for the edge case, not convenience.
02Install the generator(s) and fuel storage1–3 days Propane generator (quiet, long shelf life fuel, easy start) sized for your Tier 1–2 loads. Secure mounting, good ventilation, transfer switch or interlock so it cannot backfeed the house. Propane tanks (multiple, rotated) stored safely. Consider small diesel or multi-fuel as secondary.
03Add PTO / mechanical interface1–2 days + testing If you have tractor or other engine with PTO, generator head or pump that can be driven mechanically is extremely sovereign. No batteries, no electronics — just belts, gears, and fuel. Document hookup and test it.
04Add compressed air or other mechanical storage1–3 days Air tanks + compressor (can be run from generator or PTO) for running air tools, inflating tires, or even small air motors. Simple, long shelf life, and useful for many tasks. Gravity battery (lifting weights or pumping water uphill) is interesting long-term experiment but usually not first thing to build.
05Wire the transfer logic and test the tiers1 day + periodic drills Install manual transfer switch or interlock. Clearly label critical sub-panel. Test whole chain: generator starts, powers right loads, fuel lasts as long as advertised. Practice startup and shutdown sequence in the dark (with headlamp).
06Stock fuel, parts, and the we-are-on-the-Backup-Rack disciplineOngoing fuel rotation + annual review Keep enough propane/diesel for planned duration (plus margin). Rotate stock. Have spares (oil, filters, plugs). Discipline: use Sun Bank and Efficiency first. Use The Burn for heat. Only fire up Backup Rack when batteries critically low and forecast bad. Log every hour it runs.

The Last Resort You Hope You Never Need11 min

Why the Backup Rack is deliberately not convenient or comfortable. Noisy, smelly, fuel-hungry, maintenance-intensive compared to Sun Bank. That is the point. The friction reminds you to conserve, to fix leaks in renewable systems, and to treat every gallon of fuel as precious. A good Backup Rack is one you almost never turn on.

The Tractor as Power Plant9 min

Beauty and simplicity of mechanical PTO drive. No inverter, no battery, no delicate electronics — just engine, shaft, and generator head. When fancy solar stuff has been dead for a week, the old tractor can still pump water or run a few lights. This is the layer that survives when supply chain for solar parts has been gone for years.
