The Smith

Blacksmithing and metalworking — forge, anvil, hammers, swage block, treadle metal lathe, sharpening stones. Produces hardware, repairs broken metal, and keeps the rest of the Ark's metal things alive.

The parts list. Cores are what you actually need; “if you prefer” opens cheaper, local, or heritage swaps — never budget fallbacks, just other good ways.

Forge
Coal forge (side-draft or bottom-blast) or gas forge (if you have reliable propane and want cleaner heat for some work)~$300–1,200 for a good used or entry-level new coal forge; $200–600 for a decent gas forge setup

Coal/charcoal is the true sovereign option — you can make or source it locally and it works when propane is gone. A good side-draft coal forge is simple, repairable, and can be built from scrap if you have basic welding or masonry skills.

Anvil

The anvil is the heart of the shop. A good one will last generations. Weight matters for heavy work; a too-light anvil fights you. Look for a good face, a usable horn, and a hardy hole.

Hammers and hand tools
Blacksmith hammer (2–3 lb cross-peen or straight-peen), ball-peen hammers (various weights), sledge (4–8 lb), tongs (multiple sizes and jaw types), hot cut hardy, cold chisel, punches, drifts~$150–400 for a good starter set (used is often fine)

You will use the cross-peen or straight-peen for almost everything. Good tongs that actually hold the work are worth their weight in gold. Start with a few versatile pairs and add as you need them.

Swage block and/or post vise

The swage block gives you forms for bending, upsetting, and texturing. The post vise is the blacksmith's third hand — it holds work at a comfortable height and angle while you hammer.

Fuel and fire management

The fire is the heart of the forge. Learn to build and maintain a clean, hot fire. Bad fuel or bad fire management makes everything harder and more frustrating. A hand-crank blower is the most sovereign option.

Sparks, hot metal, and heavy hammers are unforgiving. Leather protects you from burns and sparks. Good footing and lighting prevent trips and missed strikes.

When a hinge breaks, a hook bends, or a tool handle ferrule cracks, most modern people go buy a replacement. The Smith makes or repairs the part on the spot from whatever scrap is on hand. This is the difference between a household that slowly falls apart when supply chains fail and one that can keep its built environment functional for generations.

Forge-Welding Is the Sovereign Joining Method10 min

Modern welding is fast and convenient when the power and gas are on. Forge-welding, riveting, and collars are slower but require only fire, hammer, and skill. They were good enough to build cathedrals and ships. They will still work when the MIG welder is a very expensive doorstop.
