② The Manifest

The parts list. Cores are what you actually need; “if you prefer” opens cheaper, local, or heritage swaps — never budget fallbacks, just other good ways.

The fireproof / waterproof container (the body of the Vault)

UL-classified to survive 1700°F for 1 hour and ETL-verified against water for 24 hours, sized to hold the Ark Vault single-board computer, a stack of dated USB sticks, and a slim binder or two upright. Buy the media-rated line, not a 'documents-only' fire box — paper chars at a higher temperature than plastic and silicon, so a paper-rated safe will cook your microSD long before the binders smolder. Bolt-down holes are pre-drilled in the floor.

No fire rating, but it's airtight, watertight, off-grid, and needs no key. Pairs well as the off-site copy rather than the primary.
The archive master media (the Ark Vault's brain, redundant)
M-DISC archival Blu-ray set + a quality USB-A drive or two~$40–90 for discs + drive

M-DISC burns data into a rock-like inorganic layer instead of dye — rated to survive a human lifetime and beyond, and any standard Blu-ray drive reads it. Burn two identical discs of the verified bundle and label each by hand. Flash (USB/microSD) is your convenient working copy, but it is NOT archival on its own: it bleeds charge and should be powered up and re-verified once a year. The discipline is the redundancy, not any one stick.

Multiple dated USB sticks, refreshed yearly~$30 for a 3-packIf a Blu-ray burner isn't in the cards, run three name-brand USB-A sticks, each labeled with the Pressing date, and re-copy the whole set onto fresh sticks every couple of years. Cheap, simple, but only safe because you keep rotating it.
Alternatively, an LTO tape or a cold external HDD~$60–120Heritage of the data-center world: tape is the longest-lived spinning-free option but needs a drive to read it. A shelved HDD, spun up annually, is the everyman's cold copy.
The off-site copy (the 'one' in 3-2-1)

The whole point of the Vault is surviving a fire or flood — and a fire that takes your house takes the safe inside it. One copy must live somewhere else. A safe-deposit box is the classic move: small annual fee, climate-controlled, and not in your basement. Drop in a copy after each Pressing, swap out the old one.

The printed binders (the human-readable layer)

Bytes need a machine; paper needs a flashlight. Print every speced Rig and the Vault index into D-ring binders with acid-free, lignin-free sheet protectors so a child with no power and no password can still read what the family knows. Number the spines. This is the layer that passes the Ark Vault test in year ten.

Dye ink fades and water-smears; pigment ink is rated to resist fading for 100–200 years on the right paper. Print the binders with pigment, not dye, on acid-free / lignin-free stock. Note Epson's pigment longevity is for its dedicated pigment lines — don't pour aftermarket pigment into a dye EcoTank, it clogs the head.

Laser printer on acid-free paper~$150–250Toner is fused plastic — water-resistant and stable for decades, and far cheaper. Excellent for text-heavy Rig binders where you don't need photo color.

The physical anchor (so it can't simply be carried off)

An unbolted safe is just a heavy box a thief picks up and opens later. Lag-bolt it through the floor into a joist or into a concrete slab with sleeve anchors. Anchoring also keeps it from tipping in an earthquake or being floated loose in a flood.

Most archives don't burn — they corrode and grow mildew over years of trapped humidity. A 750g rechargeable canister protects up to ~57 cu ft; its beads change color when saturated, and you dry them out in a 325°F oven for a few hours and reuse them indefinitely. A cheap hygrometer tucked inside tells you the real story.

Keep a single dated sheet listing: what media is here, what each USB/disc holds, the date of each Pressing, where the off-site copy lives, and any passwords needed to mount the Ark Vault SBC. Whoever opens this in ten years should be able to use it without calling anyone. Update it every Pressing.

Bytes Rot, Paper Endures5 min

Every digital format is a bet that someone will still build a machine to read it. Flash drains, drives seize, file formats go obsolete, and Blu-ray players quietly disappear from store shelves. Paper asks nothing but light and eyes. The Vault hedges that bet on purpose: keep the convenient bytes, but always leave a printed layer a great-grandchild could read by flashlight with the grid down. The archive isn't done when the files are backed up — it's done when it can be read by someone who has none of your tools.

The 3-2-1 Rule Is Love4 min

Three copies, two kinds of media, one somewhere else — it sounds like an IT checklist, but it's really a promise that the family's memory won't die with one fire, one flood, or one dropped drive. Each redundant copy is a quiet act of caring for people you may never meet. The off-site copy especially: it's the one that says 'even if our house is gone, we are not.' Make the copies. Date them. Hand one to someone you trust. That's not paranoia — that's how you tell the future you loved it.

The Index Is the Inheritance3 min

A locked box full of unlabeled sticks is a riddle, not a gift. What turns the Vault from a hoard into an inheritance is the one-page Index — what's here, when it was made, where the other copy lives, how to open it. Whoever opens the safe in ten years shouldn't have to call you to understand it, because the whole point is that you might not be there to call. Write the map plainly. That sheet is the most important thing in the safe.

What Outlasts the Drive That Held It8 min

A USB stick in a sock drawer is not a family archive. The Vault is the physical answer to a boring disaster: fire, flood, theft, or a dead laptop that held the only copy of the seed list, the medical binder, and the printed Sequences. Fire-rated box, dated media, paper binders, and an index someone else can open cold. The 3-2-1 habit shows up as objects here — multiple copies, different media, one off-site or highly protected. Bytes rot; paper lasts; both belong. The Sequence is as much about labeling and rotation as about buying steel. An unlabeled stick from 2019 is noise. A dated stick with a printed index is inheritance. What changes is the end-of-project ritual. When a rig is speced or a pressing is cut, something physical lands in the Vault. Knowledge stops living only in one person's head or one cloud account. Years later, the household can rebuild from the box even if the original builder is not in the room.
