The parts list. Cores are what you actually need; “if you prefer” opens cheaper, local, or heritage swaps — never budget fallbacks, just other good ways.

The Ledger

Hardbound, lay-flat notebook with numbered pages and a name-indexed front section~$8–25

This is the spine of the whole rig. One partner per page or block: who they are, where they're from, what they make or grow, every trade you've done, and how it went. Numbered pages and an index mean you can find a name in seconds and nobody can quietly tear a page out without it showing. Keep it boring on the cover — it should look like a recipe book, not a dossier.

The Vetting Checklist

Trust shouldn't ride on a good feeling on a bad day. Write down what you actually check: do they keep their word on small things first? Did a partner you trust vouch for them? Do they show up when they say? Do they respect privacy, or gossip about who has what? Score it the same way every time so you're not fooled by a smooth talker. Start every new partner at 'small trades only' and let them earn their way up.

Traditionally, a vouching word from the grange, church, or co-op~$0The oldest vetting system there is: a trusted member stakes their own name on the newcomer. A 'so-and-so sent me' carried real weight because the voucher's reputation was on the line too.

The Intel Log

A dated, back-of-the-notebook section for regional conditions — prices, shortages, weather, route notes, who's buying or selling what~$0

Trade is half about people and half about conditions. Every time you hear something worth knowing — fuel's tight two towns over, the feed store's out of layer pellet, a bridge is out, eggs trading 2-for-1 against honey this month — date it and write it down. Dated entries let you tell fresh intel from stale. Mark each 'saw it myself,' 'trusted partner,' or 'heard secondhand' so you weight it right.

Your reputation web is also a map of who has what, and that map is dangerous in the wrong hands. Decide up front what you will NOT write down plainly: nobody's stockpiles, nobody's defenses, nobody's exact address if a town and a landmark will do. Use initials or trade-names for anything sensitive, and keep the key in your head, not on the page. Never let the Ledger leave the property casually, and never photograph it to a phone that touches the cloud. A trade partner who learns you blab about other people's supplies will rightly stop trusting you.

The web isn't the notebook — the notebook just remembers the web. The actual trust is built face-to-face, slowly, by showing up and being the same person every time. Put it on the calendar: be at the swap, the market, the potluck, the barn-raising. Bring a little surplus to give before you ever ask. Reputation is a deposit account — you fund it in good times so you can draw on it when things go sideways.

The Outcome Tally

A simple per-partner running score — kept in each partner's Ledger entry — of trades delivered, fumbled, and made right~$0

Memory lies, especially about people you like. A tally doesn't. After each trade, mark it: delivered as promised, came up short, made it right, or burned you. Over a year the page tells the truth — who's a rock, who's flaky-but-honest, who to keep at small-trades-only. Note HOW someone handles a shortfall: a partner whose hens stopped laying but who showed up with extra firewood is worth more than one who delivered perfectly and never would in a pinch.

01Define your trust circle and write your criteriaAn evening Start with who you already trust and why. List them in the Ledger, then write the one-page Vetting Checklist that names what 'trustworthy' actually means to your household — kept word on small things, vouched-for, shows up, respects privacy. Decide your trade tiers (small / medium / consequential) and the rule that everyone starts at small. You can't grow a web you haven't defined.
02Vet a new partner against the checklistOver several weeks When someone new comes into orbit, run them through the checklist deliberately — don't skip it because they seem nice. Get a vouch from an existing partner if you can. Do a couple of small, low-stakes trades first and watch how they handle the details. Open a Ledger page noting where they came from and who vouched.
03Log trades and outcomes after every exchange5 min per trade Discipline beats memory. The same day as any trade, write it in the partner's page and update the Outcome Tally: what was exchanged, delivered as promised, and how any shortfall was handled. A Ledger that's current is worth ten times one you 'mean to catch up on.'
04Share and receive regional intel responsiblyOngoing Work the Intel Log both ways. Bring useful conditions to your circle and write down what comes back — dated and sourced. Apply the Privacy Posture every time: share conditions freely, but never another household's stockpiles, defenses, or exact location. Be generous with intel and tight-lipped about people.

Each season, read back through the Ledger: promote reliable partners up a tier, drop anyone who burned you (and note why), and re-confirm contacts you haven't seen. Trim dead entries and stale intel. Keep showing up in person — the Network Practice is what keeps the web alive between trades.
06Plug into the heritage networkA season to root in Don't build alone what already exists. Find the grange, the church circle, the volunteer fire company, the seed swap, the co-op — the old mutual-aid networks where reputation already travels by word of mouth. Join one, contribute before you ask, and let your standing there become part of your web.
07Troubleshoot and adapt for the Vault scenarioA weekend drill Picture the grid down and the internet gone for good. Your web is now pure paper and presence — which is exactly why it was built this way. Confirm: the Ledger is paper-first; sensitive names are coded so a lost book doesn't endanger anyone; the key facts live in the Ark Vault; and your in-person network knows your face, not just your handle. Run a drill: could you re-establish trade using only the notebook and a day of walking the network? Fix whatever it exposes — a phone-only contact, an un-coded address, an intel log nobody but you can read.

When the dollar wobbles and the supply chain coughs, the thing that actually moves goods between households isn't money or even barter math — it's trust. A partner extends you a trade on a handshake because your reputation is good. That handshake is faster, cheaper, and more resilient than any payment rail, and it can't be inflated away or shut off by a server going dark. The Reputation Web is the financial infrastructure of an Ark that intends to outlast the systems it was born into.

Reputation Travels Faster Than You Do7 min

You'll be known in your region long before you meet most of the people who know of you — and you don't get to choose what they've heard. Word of how you handle a shortfall, whether you gossip about other people's supplies, whether your word holds when it costs you — all of it runs the network ahead of you, and it compounds. Tend that traveling reputation on purpose, and know the dark side: one burned partner or one loose tongue can poison a whole circle's view of you, and repair is slower than damage.
