Mesh node (the watcher's radio)

The cheap, proven workhorse you're already running for The Signal. Reuse the same hardware so there's one firmware to learn, one antenna standard, one mental model. A node sitting at the gate IS the early-warning post — it carries the alert hop-by-hop with no cell tower, no router, no cloud in the path.

Motion sensor (the trip-wire)

A two-dollar passive-infrared sensor on a spare GPIO pin, with Meshtastic's Detection Sensor Module (firmware 2.2.2+) watching that pin. Something warm crosses the beam, the node fires a text alert across the mesh. This is the whole trick: the radio you already own becomes a sensor hub for the price of a candy bar. Set a minimum broadcast interval so a windy bush doesn't spam you.

Door / gate contact (the breach line)

A magnetic reed switch on a gate, barn door, or shed — same Detection Sensor Module, just watching for the circuit to open. Costs pennies, no power draw until it trips, and tells you the difference between 'something moved' and 'someone opened the back gate.' Pair it with the PIR so motion + a contact event together is a much stronger signal than either alone.

A sensor post is worthless if it dies in week two. A small panel and a LiFePO4 cell keep an outdoor node running for years with no trips to the breaker. For a single low-draw Meshtastic node, even a 6–10W panel and an 18650 in the enclosure is plenty; size up to a 20Ah LiFePO4 if you're also feeding a camera or a buzzer. LiFePO4 over lead-acid for the cold tolerance and the 2,500+ cycle life.

Alert & logging path (how you actually hear it)

The alert has to land somewhere a human notices. The mesh delivers the Detection Sensor text to your personal node (the Mirror in The Signal rig) — phone buzzes over Bluetooth, no internet required. Then back it with a DUMB local layer at the post: a piezo buzzer and an LED on a node GPIO that screams locally even if every other radio is down. Belt and suspenders. Log every event to the node's serial/flash so you can read the pattern later — was it 2am three nights running?

No firmware updates, no solar panel, runs on kibble, and has been the household early-warning system for ten thousand years. A dog hears the truck on the road before any PIR sees it, tells you the difference between a deer and a stranger, and deters before anything even trips a sensor. Awareness as the first layer — and the dog is layer zero. The tech tells you WHERE and logs the WHEN; the dog tells you it matters RIGHT NOW. Treat it as part of the rig: it pairs with The Hedge (the physical edge) the same way the mesh does.
