② The Manifest

The parts list. Cores are what you actually need; “if you prefer” opens cheaper, local, or heritage swaps — never budget fallbacks, just other good ways.

Primary milling tool

Portable sawmill (band or chainsaw mill) or Alaskan-style chainsaw mill with ripping chain~$1,500–6,000 for a good used or entry-level new band mill; $300–800 for a good chainsaw mill setup

A portable band mill is the sweet spot for most Arks — accurate, relatively safe, and can handle logs up to 20–30+ ft. Chainsaw mills are cheaper entry but slower, dustier, and more dangerous.

Moving and positioning heavy, round, unpredictable logs is where most injuries happen. Good tools and habits here save fingers and lives.

Lumber handling and drying

The mill only gets you to green lumber. Proper stickering and slow air-drying is what turns it into stable, usable material. This step takes time — plan for it.

A dull or poorly maintained mill is slow, dangerous, and wastes wood. Learn to sharpen or swap blades yourself. Keep consumables in stock.

③ The Sequence

01Assess and stage the log30 min – 2 hrs per log Evaluate the tree or log for soundness, straightness, and defects. Decide what you actually want out of it. Buck to length with some extra for trim. Stage it on the mill deck or skids so it is stable and at a comfortable working height. This is the most dangerous step — take your time.
02Set up the mill and make the first cuts (Lane 1 vs Lane 2)1–4 hrs per log depending on size and method Lane 1 (Standard Practice): Use the mill's power feed or easy manual cranking, laser or straightedge guides, and cut for maximum yield and consistent thickness. Lane 2 (Sovereign Build): Same mill, but you may be turning the crank by hand or with a helper, using simpler sighting methods, and accepting slightly more variation. Both should produce straight, reasonably consistent boards.
03Sticker and stack immediately30–60 min per log As boards come off the mill, sticker them the same day while they are still green and flat. Good stickers, good alignment, even weight on top, and protection from direct sun and driving rain. Bad stickering causes warp, twist, and checking that no amount of later work can fully fix.
04Air-dry and monitorMonths to years (passive) + occasional checks Let the stack sit for months (softwoods) to years (hardwoods, thick stock). Check periodically for mold, insect activity, or movement. A moisture meter is useful but experience and patience matter more. Do not rush this step if you want stable, usable lumber.
05Process dried lumber into usable stock1–4 hrs per project batch When dry enough for your purpose, bring boards inside or under cover. Joint and plane to final dimensions as needed for projects. Save offcuts and shorts for smaller work or kindling. The Mill has now fed The Joinery, The Bench, and countless other rigs.
06Utilize the byproducts (Stack & Loop)Ongoing as material is generated Chips and sawdust go to animal bedding (Tend), compost (Loop/Grow), or fuel (The Burn or a simple gasifier). Slab wood and edgings become raised beds, fences, or more fuel. Nothing leaves the property if you can help it.

The Mill Turns Liability into Asset12 min

A big storm-downed tree or a dangerous leaning tree is usually seen as a problem and a cost. The Mill turns it into the raw material for the next decade of building and repair. Chips feed animals and gardens. The skill of milling also gives you independence — you are no longer at the mercy of whatever the local sawmill happens to have in stock.

Drying Is Where Most People Fail10 min

You can mill beautiful straight boards and then ruin them in a weekend with bad stickering. Proper spacing, alignment, weight, and protection from the worst weather are not optional. This is the step that separates people who have a pile of twisted, checked lumber from people who have a usable stack of air-dried stock ready for The Joinery.
