The Joinery

Woodworking craft — turning boards (from The Mill) into useful things: doors, cabinets, furniture, boxes, tool handles, structures. The Forge rig where the Sovereign Build lane is most visible.

① The two lanes

Standard Practice

The conventional small-shop woodworking setup. What every furniture-making YouTube channel and woodworking class teaches. Power tools (table saw, jointer, planer, bandsaw, drill press, router) for breaking down stock and cutting joinery quickly and repeatably. Jigs and templates for consistent results. This is the competent baseline that lets you learn the craft fast and produce work at a reasonable pace. It is also completely dependent on electricity and current supply chains for parts and consumables.

The parts list. Cores are what you actually need; “if you prefer” opens cheaper, local, or heritage swaps — never budget fallbacks, just other good ways.

Workbench + vises

Same as The Bench (solid top, face vise + tail vise) — this is the Joinery's primary workstationshared with The Bench

If you only build one bench, make it good. The Joinery lives or dies by how well you can clamp and work wood flat and square.

Hand planes (full kit)

Jack, jointer (No. 7 or 8), smoothing plane, block plane, shoulder plane or rebate plane, router plane~$300–800 for a complete used set (vintage is excellent value)

The jointer flattens and squares edges for glue-ups. The shoulder plane is for fine-tuning tenon shoulders and rebates. Router plane for cleaning the bottom of grooves and housings. This is where the Sovereign Build really shines.

Saws for joinery

Dovetail saw (15–20 ppi), tenon saw or carcass saw (12–15 ppi), rip saw and crosscut saw (or one good panel saw), coping saw or fret saw~$150–400 for the set

The back saws are for precise joinery cuts. A good rip saw for breaking down stock along the grain. Coping saw for curves and waste removal in joinery. Keep them sharp and set correctly.

Chisels and gouges

Bevel-edge set (1/8" to 1-1/2" or so) + mortise chisels (1/4", 3/8", 1/2") + a few gouges for curves~$150–400 for a good used or new set

Mortise chisels are for chopping, not paring — they are thicker and stronger. The bevel-edge set does the fine paring and fitting. Gouges for when you need to remove wood in a curve.

Marking and measuring for joinery

Marking gauge (or two — one for pins, one for tails), knife, square (combination + try square), bevel gauge, dividers, ruler, story stick~$50–150

Accurate layout is everything in joinery. A sharp marking knife + gauge leaves a line you can feel and register a chisel or saw against. Story sticks transfer dimensions without numbers and reduce cumulative error.

Treadle / non-electric tools (Sovereign Build core)

Treadle lathe (or pole lathe), treadle scroll saw or frame saw, treadle drill press or brace-and-bit set, drawknife, spokeshave, adze or broadaxe (for rough work)~$200–800 (much of it can be built or sourced used/vintage)

This is the heart of the Sovereign Build lane. When the power is out, these tools still work. A treadle lathe or pole lathe can turn legs, spindles, bowls. The scroll saw or frame saw cuts curves. The brace and bit bores holes. These tools are slower but they keep working when everything else is dead weight.

Glue and clamping for joinery

PVA glue (or hide glue for traditional work), cauls, clamps (many), winding sticks, straightedgesshared with The Bench + glue stock

Good glue-ups require flat, square surfaces and even pressure. Cauls and winding sticks help keep panels flat. Hide glue is reversible and traditional; PVA is convenient and strong for most work.

Finishing supplies (basic)

Sandpaper (various grits), scrapers, oil (linseed, tung, or Danish), wax, brushes or rags, shellac (flakes or premixed) for sealing~$50–150 initial

The Joinery produces things that need to last and look good. Basic finishing knowledge (surface prep, oil/wax, shellac) is part of the craft. Start simple.

③ The Sequence

01Design and select material1–4 hrs Decide what you are building and choose appropriate wood (species, grain direction, moisture content, defects). Make a cutting list. Think about grain orientation for stability and strength. This is where good design meets the limitations of real wood.
02Break down stock (Lane 1 vs Lane 2)2–8 hrs depending on method and quantity Lane 1 (Standard Practice): Use table saw, jointer, planer to get straight, square, consistent stock quickly and repeatably. Lane 2 (Sovereign Build): Use hand saws, planes, shooting board, winding sticks, and a lot more time and care. Both paths should result in stock that is flat, straight, and square enough for the joinery you intend.
03Layout and mark the joinery1–3 hrs Use story sticks, marking gauge, knife, and squares. Mark all pieces while they are still separate. Be consistent about which face and edge is reference. Leave extra length for trimming after glue-up if needed. Accurate layout is 80% of good joinery.
04Cut and fit the joinery (Lane 1 vs Lane 2)4–20+ hrs depending on complexity and method Lane 1: Machine-cut tenons on table saw, mortises with router or mortiser, dovetails with jig or careful bandsaw + chisel. Lane 2: Hand-sawn tenons, chopped mortises, hand-cut dovetails with saw and chisel. Fit by shaving, not by force. Test assemblies dry. The goal in both lanes is joints that go together with hand pressure and stay together with glue.
05Glue-up and clamp1–3 hrs + drying time (usually 1–2 hrs minimum before moving, 24 hrs full cure for PVA) Have everything ready (glue, clamps, cauls, mallet, rags). Apply glue sparingly and evenly. Assemble in the correct order. Clamp just enough to close the joints — over-clamping can squeeze out all the glue or distort the piece. Check for square and flat while the glue is wet. Clean squeeze-out immediately.
06Clean up, fit, and finish4–12+ hrs depending on size and finish chosen Remove dried squeeze-out with chisel or scraper. Plane or sand surfaces flat and smooth (work through the grits). Fit doors, drawers, lids, etc. Apply finish (oil, wax, shellac, or film finish). The finish protects the wood and makes the piece a pleasure to use and look at.
07Maintain and repair (the long game)Ongoing (minutes to hours as needed) A well-made piece from The Joinery should be repairable for generations. Keep it clean, re-oil or wax as needed, tighten loose joints with glue or wedges if they ever loosen. When something breaks, the skills and tools from The Bench and The Joinery let you fix it instead of throwing it away.

Standard Practice (electric tools, consistent stock, jigs) teaches you the craft quickly and reliably. The Sovereign Build (treadle tools, hand-cut joinery, repair, salvage) is what keeps the craft alive when the grid and supply chains are gone. You need both. Skipping Lane 1 leaves you without the skill. Skipping Lane 2 leaves you with a workshop full of expensive paperweights the first time the power goes out for a month.

The Joinery Is Where You See the Whole Ark11 min

Every other domain eventually needs something made of wood: doors and cabinets for Shield and Mend, handles and jigs for Grow and Loop, furniture and structures that last. The Joinery turns raw lumber from The Mill and hardware from The Smith into the actual built environment of the Ark. This is the rig that makes the rest of the physical world usable and repairable.
