The Bench

The absolute foundation of the Forge domain. A competent, organized home workshop that lets you repair what breaks before it becomes garbage. Hand tools by category, sharpening station (the gatekeeping skill), fasteners, measuring/marking, basic repair capacity. The repair-not-replace ethic lives here.

② The Manifest

The parts list. Cores are what you actually need; “if you prefer” opens cheaper, local, or heritage swaps — never budget fallbacks, just other good ways.

Workbench
Solid wood top (maple, birch, or construction lumber laminated) 6–8 ft x 24–30 in, 34–36 in high, with face vise + tail vise~$200–500 (lumber + vises; can be much less if you source used vises and build the top)

The vise is the heart of the bench. A good face vise (Record or equivalent) + a tail vise or holdfasts lets you clamp almost anything. Build the top thick and flat — it is the reference surface for everything else.

Sharpening station

Sharpening is the gatekeeping skill of Forge. A dull tool is more dangerous and less effective than a sharp one. The station should be dedicated and always ready. Learn to sharpen by hand — it is the skill that outlives any powered grinder.

Hand planes (essential trio)
Jack plane (No. 5 or 5-1/2), smoothing plane (No. 4 or 4-1/2), block plane (low-angle or standard)~$150–400 for good used or new (vintage Stanleys in good shape are excellent value)

The jack does the heavy lifting and initial flattening. The smoother brings the surface to final. The block plane is for end grain, chamfers, and small work. Learn to sharpen and set them — they will do 80% of your surface work.

Saws (essential)

A sharp handsaw is faster and more accurate than many power saws for small-to-medium work. The back saw is for joinery. Coping saw for curves. Keep them sharp and properly set.

Chisels (set of 4–6)

The most used sizes cover 90% of work. Keep them sharp. A good set will last generations if cared for. The mortise chisel is for chopping deep, accurate mortises.

Measuring and marking

Accurate layout is half the battle. The combination square is the workhorse. A good marking gauge or knife leaves a finer line than pencil for joinery.

Fasteners and hardware
Assorted screws (deck, wood, machine), nails, bolts, nuts, washers, anchors, threaded rod, glue (PVA + epoxy + hide or fish glue)~$50–150 initial stock (buy as needed after that)

Keep a well-organized selection. Screws are usually better than nails for repairable work. Have both traditional and modern fasteners. Glue is part of the toolkit.

Clamps (the more the better)
Pipe clamps or bar clamps (4–6 of various lengths), quick-grip style clamps (8–12), C-clamps (a few heavy ones), spring clamps~$100–300 for a good starter set (buy used when possible)

You can never have too many clamps. Pipe clamps are the workhorses for big glue-ups. Quick-grips for everything else. C-clamps for heavy localized pressure. Keep them clean and the threads oiled.

A place for everything and everything in its place. When tools are organized and visible, you actually use them and maintain them. Shadow boards or outlines on pegboard make it obvious when something is missing.

Safety is not optional. Dust collection protects your lungs and keeps the shop usable. Regular maintenance (oiling, sharpening, cleaning) makes the tools last and perform.

Why the ability to repair what breaks is the prerequisite for trusting any specialized rig. A treadle lathe is useless if you cannot sharpen its tools. A Mill is wasted if you cannot maintain its blade. The Bench is what keeps the entire Forge (and by extension the Ark) alive when modern supply chains are gone.

Sharpening Is the Gatekeeping Skill10 min

A dull tool is more dangerous than a sharp one. It requires more force, slips more easily, and produces worse work. Learning to sharpen by hand (stones, strop, consistent angle) is the single highest-leverage skill in the entire Forge domain. It is the skill that outlives any powered grinder and any brand of tool.

Repair Starts Where the Tools Live7 min

A loose chair leg dies in a pile by the door when there is no place to fix it. The Bench is that place: a flat surface, sharp edges on the tools that cut, fasteners sorted so the right screw is not a twenty-minute hunt. The repair-not-replace ethic is not a slogan. It is a room (or a corner) that makes the five-minute fix cheaper than a trip to replace the whole object. Sharpening is the skill that gates everything else. Dull chisels and knives turn simple jobs into thrashing. Once a household can put a real edge on steel, woodworking and everyday repairs stop feeling like punishment. The Manifest looks long because competence is many small tools, not one magic machine. When the Bench is real, broken things stop migrating to the trash by default. Kids learn to ask for help at the vise instead of hiding a crack. Other Forge rigs — joinery, mill, smith — only earn their keep if this foundation already absorbs the ordinary failures of a working house.
